Chapter Twelve

Jackson

Jackson had made his way through the office, chatting with everyone extra after having been gone for so long. As happy as he was to see everyone again, he just really had wanted to get to his office before the delivery guy checked in.

He was still blown away that the Timini he had been talking to had been Minnie. He’d been wracking his brain ever since their meeting to think whether he had ever heard that her real name was Timini during any of the time they had known each other in middle school and high school. He didn’t think he had.

But he desperately wanted to keep seeing her. He had been a world-class jerk back in high school when they’d broken up. Actually, he’d been a jerk both before they broke up and after. His face burned just thinking about how he had acted back then. He wasn’t sure he could convince her to take a chance on him again, but he was sure going to try.

He knew she wouldn’t appreciate flowers if he’d sent them to her—he remembered that from when they were teens. But who knew? A lot had probably changed in the past twelve years. So instead, he’d gone with his sister, Emma, to Voodoo Doughnuts and gotten all of her favorites, plus a couple of his. Then she helped him to stick an eighteen inch small wooden dowel into each donut and then arrange them in a vase like they were flowers. They even used tissue paper as the green stuff that was usually behind flowers.

He’d gotten one of the cards and the plastic poker sticks that went in floral arrangements to hold the card. On the card, he’d written out “I donut want things to end with us.” It reminded him of the myriad of ways they had asked each other to school dances back in the day, and he hoped it would make her smile.

And not at all remind her of the days when he had truly been a jerk to her.

Then he’d paid a delivery driver who was willing to contact him as soon as it had been delivered to take it to her place.

Emma snuck into his office, acting like she was supposed to be in a meeting somewhere and was skipping so she could find out the results. He glanced at the clock. Eleven minutes, and he’d have to head to a meeting he couldn’t skip. They both sat in silence, watching his phone, him trying not to bounce his leg incessantly and her trying not to bite her lip.

Finally, his phone lit up with a text from the delivery driver: Just dropped it off. Thanks again for the big tip!

He thanked the man and then went back to staring at his phone.

“What now?” Emma asked.

He lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “I know she’s received them, so it’s not like I need to check in with her to see if they were delivered or anything like that. If she is willing to message me, she will.
